Preparing for a Social Audit on a Kenyan Farm

2026-05-30 6 min read

Social audits carry commercial consequences. A critical finding on wages, safety or harassment can suspend a supply relationship immediately.

The good news: the requirements are largely Kenyan law, already known to most HR teams.

Documents to have ready

  • Signed contracts for all categories of workers, including casuals
  • Payroll showing at least the agricultural minimum wage and overtime
  • Working hour records and leave registers
  • Age verification records at recruitment
  • Statutory deductions and remittance evidence

Health and safety on the ground

Auditors walk the site. Fire equipment, first aid provision, chemical stores, PPE issue records and machine guarding are checked physically against the register.

Committees must meet and keep minutes

Health and safety, gender and welfare committees need elected members, scheduled meetings and minutes showing issues raised and resolved.

Never coach workers

Coaching is detected quickly and treated as a serious integrity finding. Instead, make sure workers know their rights, the grievance channel and the committees available to them.
