How Kenyan Farms Can Reduce MRL Rejections in Export Produce

2026-07-09 6 min read

When a consignment is intercepted for a residue exceedance, the cost is rarely the consignment itself — it is the increased inspection frequency and the loss of buyer confidence that follows.

Almost every case we investigate traces back to one of five controllable causes.

1. Products used off-label

Using a product registered for a different crop is the most common single cause. Maintain an approved product list per crop and per market, and lock the store so nothing outside the list is issued.

2. Pre-harvest intervals ignored under pressure

Harvest pressure and spray programmes collide at the worst times. Block harvesting digitally or physically with field signage showing the safe harvest date after each application.

3. Sprayer calibration drift

Worn nozzles increase output significantly. Calibrate at the start of the season and monthly thereafter, and record output per knapsack.

4. Tank contamination and drift

  • Triple rinse between products and record it
  • Respect buffer zones next to blocks close to harvest
  • Spray in low wind and record weather conditions

5. No residue testing plan

Test based on risk: new products, new blocks, short intervals and new market requirements. Use accredited laboratories and act on trends rather than filing results.
